David Hurn began his career as a self-taught freelance photographer and gained an early reputation with his reportage of the 1956 Hungarian revolution. Hurn eventually turned away from coverage of current affairs, preferring to take a more personal approach to photography. Pictured here, Arizona residents take to Salt River for their favorite summer pastime: tubing. Enjoyed particularly by the local youth, the activity consists of gently drifting down the river for many miles and spending up to six hours in the sun. According to enthusiasts, the most important thing to bring along is a drink and sun-tan lotion.
