The Tank Man. Beijing, China, 1989

Known for a bold approach to photojournalism, Stuart Franklin has photographed some of the biggest news events of the 21st century. His images of the June 4th protests at Tiananmen Square gained immediate prominence, with the photograph of ‘the Tank Man’ remaining iconic today. Amid the tension that ensued between journalists and the Chinese government, the rolls of film that Franklin shot that day were smuggled out of China and back to Magnum’s offices for processing.
