In 1975, after focusing on America and other Western countries for much of his practice, Hiroji Kubota turned his eyes to Asia: “Wherever I went, I was overwhelmed by the great vitality of what I saw, and by the dynamic tension between change and tradition that exists throughout much of the region,” the photographer explains. During a trip to Myanmar (Burma) in 1997, Kubota photographed the Long Neck Tribes, who, following tradition, wore coils around their necks from an early age to lengthen them.
