The film To Live, directed by Zhang Yimou and starring Gong Li and Ge You, is the story of a couple living through tumultuous periods of modern Chinese history, from the Chinese Civil War in the late 1940s to the Culture Revolution. Released in 1994, the film won the Grand Prix at Cannes Film Festival that year and Best Non-English Language film at the BAFTAs in 1995.
